An Interview With a Bear

Got to bed about 11:30pm after reading a chapter in a story book about John Muir… hence the title. An Interview with a Bear is the title of one of his adventures but its also fitting for this article. I had a really difficult time getting to sleep because I drank a bit too much tea during the day. I had just gotten to sleep and was deep in it. Deep enough to where I didn’t care what was going on around me but not deep enough where I was oblivious to my surroundings.

At 2:20am I heard something outside my car, sat up, said screw it and went back to bed. It sounded like a raccoon was messing with my rear fender but I was too out of it to care. Then after a few minutes, or what I presume was a few minutes later I awoke to my whole car rocking back and forth. I flew into an upright position, looked out my window and saw a bear under the nearly full moon damn near up against my glass. I didn’t have my contacts in or glasses on but it was close enough to not need them. My first thought was that it was going to screw up my car so I smacked the window it was up against. It jumped back a few feet and I paused for a second thinking what to do. I started searching for my car keys which were in my pants pocket buried in my car. I am not sure if the bear disappeared when I started looking for my keys or if it was the starting of the engine that did it but I know that when I looked back out the window the bear was gone.

It was a uncomfortable situation and actually scared the hell out of me. Not going to lie. If it happens again I would not react in the same way. This time I relocated but that bear was probably long gone and it was unnecessary to leave so next time I will stay. I also will get my glasses on and figure out if it was a grizzly or a black bear. I couldn’t tell with this one. I think it was a grizzly because of the nose but I didn’t have my glasses on so I am not totally sure. I do know that it was a decent sized bear. Not huge but not small… maybe 300 pounds. I also will keep a flashlight handy from now on to shine at the bear to identify it and I also have a green laser so I might see if it will chase it like dogs or cats do. My guess is it will not but I am interested to see. How cool would that be if it did circles around my car chasing a laser.
